Creating Peppermint Seed: Nature’s Own Hybrid

“Peppermint produces sterile seeds.  How do you make peppermint seed if that is so?”

______________________________________________________

Peppermint produces sterile seeds when self pollinated.  This is because peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint.

The most common way that Peppermint is propagated is through cuttings.  To develop the seed, a watermint plant is pollinated by spearmint.  The resulting seed is a ‘hybrid’ of sorts between watermint and spearmint, but is not a true hybrid because it was a cross between two different species rather than a cross within one species.
