The Difference Between Scentimental and Rock & Roll Roses

“Thanks for all the rose articles.  Can you tell me the difference between Scentimental and Rock and Roll?”

Scentimental

Rock and Roll

Scentimental and Rock & Roll roses are very similar, as they are both bred by Tom Carruth of Week’s Wholesale Rose Grower, Inc.  The difference is that Rock & Roll is a Grandiflora, while Scentimental is a Floribunda.

Grandiflora roses are a cross between the Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses. The flower size is midway between that of it’s parents. Flowers form on long stems and are borne either singly or in small clusters. The blooms are usually double and with a striking fragrance. Bushes normally  grow to a height of 3′ — 6′, making it ideal as a background border planting.

This is a small class of roses and often included in the hybrid tea category and used similarly in the garden. But like floribundas, they produce clusters of flowers, where hybrid teas tend to produce single stems. The grandiflora’s clustering of its flowers are often described as a candelabra form. Queen Elizabeth was the first grandiflora and is still considered one of the best.

Grandiflora roses are ideal for cutting, exhibition and garden display. Grandiflora blooms are often borne in clusters. They are consistent rebloomers, grow in various shapes and heights, and come in a wide range of colors.

Floribunda roses are the result of crossbreeding between polyantha roses and hybrid teas. An excellent landscape rose for borders, beds, and hedging,
floribundas were introduced in the 1930s.

  1. I was not wondering about the plant varieties in general but those two specifically. Which is more disease resistant, which has a stronger fragrance, is there any slight variation in color or form etc……

  2. Scentimental is going to be more disease resistant, but Rock n’ Roll is more fragrant. As far color, Rock n’ Roll is a slight bit more vibrant. However, all of these factors are rather comparable and may differ slightly depending on the environment they are grown in.
